Make the Holidays a Gift for Your Job Search!

The holiday season is rapidly approaching, and to most people that means shopping for gifts, going to holiday parties, and spending time with family and friends. But just because you are busier than usual doesn’t mean you have to put your job search on hold!

Companies hire employees year-round, including during the holiday season, which is another reason why you shouldn’t let the holidays interrupt your job search.

Below are some tips for keeping your job search alive during this busy season:

Seasonal Workers

The holiday season is the prime time when service-oriented companies hire additional workers. Sure, they may tell you the position is expected to last six weeks – just before to just after the holiday season.  But, ultimately, if you do a great job and show them that they can’t run quite the same without you, they may decide to extend your employment.

Holiday Parties

How many get-togethers are you invited to each year during the holiday season? Holiday parties, open houses, and even cookie exchanges are all ways to meet new people or reconnect with family, friends, colleagues, and their friends and acquaintances.  Take advantage of these opportunities! Believe it or not, someone you may talk with may just happen to know a hiring manager at one of the companies you’ve been interested in. Or, they may know of a perfect opportunity that you haven’t even come across!

Networking doesn’t have to be scary, and networking at events like these comes more naturally to most people. (Just remember to put your best foot forward at parties… limit your drinking and no dancing on tables!)

Volunteering

Seek out additional volunteering opportunities. Do you know of a local nursing home that holds a holiday party for all its residents? Do you know a company that hosts a children’s holiday event? Why not get in touch with them and offer to volunteer.  You never know if the place where you’re volunteering is looking to fill positions, and volunteering is one of the best ways to get your foot in the door. Again, networking can be fun!

Send Holiday Cards

Have you wanted to get back in touch with someone, but just never knew how to go about doing it? Well, then send them a holiday card! Sometimes a short and sweet handwritten note in a card can make a person pick up the phone and give you a call.

Remember to update your resume, create personalized business cards (sites like Vistaprint are great for this), and enjoy yourself! Soon enough, not only will you be celebrating the holiday season, but you will also be celebrating your brand new job!!  Good luck!
